1. Mathur Aqueduct – A Bridge Exclusively for Water

Have you ever heard of a bridge constructed only to transport water? The Mathur Aqueduct, located in Kalikulam taluk, was built in 1966 to transport water from one hill to another. In fact, it is the tallest and the longest trough bridge in Asia. Since the trough bridge is located close to the Western Ghats, the entire place is scenic and a sight to behold. You can reach the top of the bridge for a 360-degree view of the surrounding greenery. Evenings are the best time to visit the trough bridge.

The place is called by multiple names, including the Chitharal Jain temple, Malaikovil, and Bagavathy Amman temple. You can start from Chitharal village and trek for around 14-15km to reach the crest within 30 to 40 minutes. The Jain temple is a big rock carved with images of the 23 Tirthankara, and the main deity is Mahaveer.

The calm hills on top, with the stunning view of Kanyakumari, will make your trip unforgettable. The Bagavathy Amman temple, which is close by, is also carved out of rocks. Though no regular poojas are offered, you can go inside the temple and offer prayers.
