As the name suggests, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a piece of architecture where tourists can find a memorial in honour of Swami Vivekananda created on a rock. In 1892, Swami Vivekananda is said to have visited Kanyakumari. Constructed during the 16th century, the Padmanabhapuram Palace is a stunning example of unique craftsmanship. With the serenity of the Veli Hills surrounding it, this slice of history attracts tourists and residents alike. The palace was named in honour of Lord Vishnu and was the residing place of the Travancore kings from the 16th century till the later parts of the 18th century.
During the 18th century, during the reign of the Travancore kings, the Vattakottai Fort was constructed and went on to become an immensely popular historical tourist place in Kanyakumari. Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and 1937. After he died in 1948, his ashes were divided into 12 urns, one of which made its way to Kanyakumari. Created in an Orissa-themed design, the memorial came into being in 1956.
