Gandhiji visited the district twice as a part of his tour to the princely state of Travancore. Interestingly, he was denied entry to the inner shrine because of an age-old custom prohibiting people from crossing the seas. After his death, Gandhiji’s ashes were distributed among friends and family – some were immersed in the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad. At the same time, some ashes were placed in an urn in Kanyakumari for the public to pay homage to the great leader. Later, the ashes were immersed in the Triveni Sangam in Kanyakumari. The Gandhi Mandapam was built in 1956 to commemorate this event.
